Below information researched and provided by

Brian Picton Swann

DAVID PICTON, a labourer of Marloes, married Sarah Tasker by banns at Walwyns Castle church on 5 January 1770 [Witnesses: James Surman and Thomas Tasker]. They then moved to the parish of Roch, where their first child, John Picton, was baptised, and possibly then on to Camrose. David Picton of Keeston in the parish of Camrose was paid a remittance by the Royal Navy on 15 March 1796 for the death of his second son, William Picton, in Antigua in 1793 [Class ADM 26/1, Remittances Register, TNA]. The parish register transcripts for Camrose at the NLW should be examined, as they begin in 1799, whereas burials for Camrose in the parish registers themselves only survive from 1813.

Keeston [Keystone] Congregational Chapel in Camrose has baptisms from 1790 and burials from 1808. This Chapel was a branch of Brynberian Chapel in the parish of Nevern, from 1787 to 1797, and was also associated with Rhosycaerau Chapel in the parish of St. Nicholas from 1806 to 1825 [Class RG 4/3913 and RG 4/3967]. The register of Rhosycaerau records that John Richards, who had been Minister there since at least 1777, made his last baptism there on 12 April 1795 before leaving for America. David Picton of Keeston Hill, Camrose, was buried at Keeston Chapel on 19 November 1820, a suspended member of the congregation. The death and burial place of his wife, Sarah Picton, has yet to be traced, but she was living in 1812. David and Sarah Picton were the parents of:

1. JOHN PICTON, bapt. 10 June 1770 at Roch. John Picton married Mary Adams [born at St. Mary’s parish, Haverfordwest, ca 1770] on 9 June 1794 at St. Mary’s Church, Haverfordwest [Witnesses: Mary Francis, Mary Evans]. He was of Quay Street, Haverfordwest, in 1813. John Picton was buried at St. Mary’s Haverfordwest, on 24 December 1837, aged 67 [Haverfordwest, December 1837, 26 343]. Mary Picton was living at Quay Street, Haverfordwest, in the 1841 Census, aged ‘70’, together with her daughter Sarah Picton, unmarried, aged ‘30’ [HO 107/1450/2A/21]. Mary Picton was living at 22 Quay Street, Haverfordwest, in the 1851 Census, a widow aged 81 [HO 107/2478/104]. Mary Picton of Quay Street, Haverfordwest, died on 20 May 1859, aged 94 [Haverfordwest, June 1859, 11a 482]. John and Mary Picton were the parents of:

a. WILLIAM PICTON, bapt. 14 June 1795 at Roch. He may have been named after his uncle, who had died at Antigua in October 1793, just 18 months previously. William Picton married Eliza Lawrence at Hubberston on 26 October 1817 [Witnesses: ]. She was born at Robeston West, ca 1793/4. Eliza Picton, wife to William Picton, was servant to James Hanbury Lewis of Haverfordwest, Esq., and was mentioned in his will, dated 14 July 1845, and proved in the PCC on 23 November 1846 [PROB 11/2045, fol. 814].

William Picton was living at 23 Quay Street, Haverfordwest, in the 1851 Census, next door to his mother and sister [HO 107/2478/104]. He was a labourer, aged 56, born at Haverfordwest. He enlisted as a seaman on HMS Saturn on 7 February 1854, aged 19, as a Ship’s Boy, 1st Class [ADM 139/82].

David Picton married Mary Ann Elizabeth Lampey on 14 February 1860 at Stoke Damerel, near Plymouth, Devon [Stoke Damarel, March 1860, 5b 580]. He served in the Royal Navy and as a sailor. He was discharged after 10 years service in the Royal Navy on 16 July 1864. He died between 1864 and 1871, but exactly where and when has not yet been determined and may have been at sea. Elizabeth Picton was living with her parents, Henry and Martha Lampey, in the 1871 Census at Stoke Damarel, a widow and dressmaker, aged 38 [RG 10/2136/29]. Mary Ann Elizabeth Picton remarried, on 14 November 1872 at Stoke Damerel, to William Thomas Lampey Tyler [Stoke Damarel, December 1872, 5b 543]. Mary Ann E. Tyler died on 13 February 1910. David and Mary Ann Picton had one child:

a. MARTHA MELINA PICTON, born 4 February 1864 at Stoke Damerel [Stoke Damarel, March 1864, 5b 364]. c. THOMAS PICTON, bapt. St. Mary’s, Haverfordwest, on 14 October 1802. He joined the Army at Haverfordwest and was attested for service in the Royal Staff Corps at Devonport on 4 June 1823, aged 20. He transferred as a private to the Royal Sappers and Miners on 8 June 1830. Thomas Picton must have married Catherine ------ before 1840. As she is recorded in the 1851 Census as born in Scotland, it could be that the marriage took place there. He served for many years until he was called before a review board at Woolwich on 13 June 1844. He was discharged from the Corps at Woolwich on 9 July 1844, aged 41 years and 1 month, after serving for 20 years and 36 days, suffering from chronic rheumatism and debility [Service Record: WO 97/1151/100]. During this time he served for 4 years and 10 months in Mauritius. Did he serve for any time in Scotland? His medical record says that he was awarded a pension of 1s:1d per day. The next step will be to trace his army service record back through the Muster Rolls of the Royal Sappers and Miners [WO 10/1718, Africa April 1835 to May 1837, Muster Books and Pay Lists; WO 12/13303, 1825-1832; WO 12/13304, 1831-1858].

Thomas Picton was living at St. Ishmaels in the 1851 Census, aged 51, a mason and a Chelsea Pensioner [HO 107/2477/179]. His wife, Catherine Picton, was aged 36 and was born in Scotland. Thomas Picton died on 10 December 1851, aged 47, according to the Chelsea Out-Pension records for West Wales [WO 22/114]. It could be worth following up if his widow made any claim for assistance following his death. Again, as there is no record of a death of a Catherine Picton in England or Wales, did she return home to Scotland? Thomas and Catherine Picton were the parents of:

i. WILLIAM JAMES PICTON, born 17 September 1840 in Ireland and baptised on 24 October 1840 at Castle Knock [Castleknock, 1840, R.E. 658 148]. He was living with his parents in the 1851 Census, a scholar, aged 10 [HO 107/2477/179]. There is a William Picton, a carter, aged 20, living at 4 Southern District, Maryborough, Dale, in the 1861 Census, who could be this person, born at Harberston [RG 9/4161/65]. Is this a place in Ireland, or just a mis-spelling of Hubberston or Herbrandston.

At that time he enlisted he was unmarried as he gave as his next-of-kin his mother, Ellen Picton, then living at 22 Southall Street, Bryanna, Pontyclun, and his occupation as a miner.
