FIRST GENERATION

The story as told by their nephew, Richard 'Dick' Bowen The Hatches left Hiawatha, Feb 18 1898 in a blizzard heading for their new home in Alaska. They returned to Hiawatha when they sold their share if a gold claim to a Mr. Balbry for $10,000.00. They soon returnrd to Alaska.

Story Subject: Eliza Picton silver spoon by Sue Tubach on 23 Sep 2000. I remembered that my mother (Marjorie Bowen Wilson) has one of the spoons, and I just went over and asked her about it. It had this note along with it: "Grandmother Picton's tea spoon made for her by her nephew in London Eng with her initials engraved. Used every day by her family for over 60 years. Solid material all thru. To Stephen and Vera with Love from Aunt Frances". My mother says Frances was Annie Picton Bowen's sister and her married name was Caudel and that they lived in California. My mother once told me that there were six spoons. She thinks maybe Esther and Ruth Watkins (daughters of Beulah Bowen Watkins) might have one and maybe Ray Goodwin (son of Frances Bowen Goodwin Roeder). That they were, indeed, used for tea.

Annie May PICTON was married to John Phillip BOWEN on July 19, 1890 in Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas. John Phillip BOWEN was born on July 5, 1869 in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He died on April 19, 1947 near Reserve, Kansas. John Bowen immigrated to the US from Wales as a teenager by himself before 1887. He went back to Wales and brought his sister, Katura back with him in 1887. John purchased 160 acers of land 8 miles north of Hiawatha, or 2 miles east of Reserve, Kansas. The land is still in the family and is farmed by 2 of his grandchildren. Annie May PICTON and John Phillip BOWEN had the following children:

14. Owen PICTON was born on September 14, 1879 near Hiawatha, Kansas. He died on March 12, 1931 in Missouri Methodist Hospital, St. Joesph, MO. He was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, KS. Owen's father died when he was in his early teens. Owen attended the Hiawatha Academy, A Baptist Church School located in Hiawatha, KS. Later, Hiawatha used the academy building for the first high school.

In the winter of 1931, Owen Picton, was burning corn stalks and was seriously burned in an accident on his farm. Someone has told the story that his back was bothering him. He had put some liniment on his back and had backed up to the fire to warm his back. The liniment and his clothes caught fire. He was rushed to a hospital in St Joe, MO. He was in the hospital a month when there was an outbreak of diphtheria in the hospital. He had expected to come home within a week when he was stricken with diphtheria and died.

He was married to Martha (Mattie) BIDDLE (daughter of Henry BIDDLE and Mary MCBRIDE) on March 18, 1902 near Hiawatha, Kansas. Martha (Mattie) BIDDLE was born on December 28, 1879 in old Burns farm just South of Biddle farm, Hiawatha, KS. She died on July 17, 1964 in Hiawatha Community Hospital, Hiawatha, KS. She was also known as Mattie. For some reason (I do not know why) the Biddle homestead is where my grandparents (Mattie and Owen Picton) lived when my Dad (Samuel Picton) grew up. After my Dad was grown they moved to my grandparents farm. In 1929 my grandparents and my Dad took a 3 month vacation and drove to Calif. In 1931 my grandfather died. After Grandma died the Reeses purchased the farm.

Ralph George Picton, born Feb.22, 1890 in Vista, Nebraska. Papa was in the armed forces in 1918 in Vladivostok, Siberia where he met Mama (Martha Gookoff). They married Feb 2 1920 ay Vladivostok, Siberia. I, Daisy Picton Dow was born May 31 1921in Okhotka, Siberia. In 1923 my parents were mining for gold in Okhotka when rte "Reds" came down from the hills and shot all the white Russians along the waterfront. Somehow my parents and I, along with several others escaped in a row boat. There was a Schooner in the bay named "Ruby" from Hudson Bay and it brought us to the United States. It took three months. Martha GOOKOFF was born on June 29, 1897 in Orel, Russia. Ralph George PICTON and Martha GOOKOFF had the following children:

He said that tearing down that house would mean that every house he had lived in had been tore down except the current house he was living in. After they were married, they took a short honeymoon to Kansas City, Missouri. They started life together in a three room apartment, in the house with Samuel's mother, on her farm, 9 and a half miles northeast of Hiawatha, Kansas. On February 20, 1941, they moved to Nebraska. This was the fourth move for my mother across the Nebraska - Kansas state line. Owen Picton relates one time we lived in Kansas. We lived at my Grandma Picton's house in Kansas until I was 4 years old and my sister Mary was about 1 month. Both Mary and myself were born at the Falls City hospital. We attended Mt Zion Methodist church and I was baptized there. We then moved to a farm south west of Falls City. On August 19, 1949 we moved to 1423 McLean, Falls City after a tornado destroyed some of the farm buildings and damaged the house.
